Voice notes are the most private data on your phone, and almost every voice app sends them to a server. Hushdo does the opposite: speech recognition and the language model both run on the device.
What it is
Hushdo is my own voice-notes app. Notes are transcribed, structured and searched entirely on the device using local AI models, with zero server uploads. An early-access waitlist is open at hushdo.com.
My role
I am designing and building Hushdo as a privacy-first product.
What I built
- Designing and building Hushdo end to end: a private, on-device voice-to-tasks app, iOS first and Android second.
- Whisper speech-to-text and small quantised language models run locally, so recordings and text never leave the phone.
Architecture and approach
- Flutter app generated with Very Good CLI: flavors (development, staging, production), strict lints, localisation and a test setup from day one.
- On-device speech recognition with Whisper through sherpa_onnx, and local GGUF language models through llamadart.
- Models are downloaded at runtime, never bundled, through a signed manifest in a separate repository, so the app stays small and updates are verified.
- A benchmark harness with a pass bar: only profile and release numbers on real phones count for latency, memory and quality.
- iOS 16.4+ and macOS 14+ targets.
Hard problems
Fitting a language model on a phone
Choosing a model size and quantisation that is accurate enough to extract tasks from speech and still fast, cool and memory-friendly on real devices. A throwaway spike screen measures this before any feature is built.
Trustworthy model delivery
Models are large and downloaded at runtime. A signed manifest means the app only installs files it can verify.
Outcome
- Early-access waitlist open at hushdo.com.
- Website and model hosting in separate repositories.
